Obituary of Joan Kantounis

KANTOUNIS - Joan Amanda, of Rockville Centre on January 25, 2018. Beloved wife of Stratos, MD. Devoted mother of Lizabeth OKantounis-Mozer (Thomas), S. Jeffery Kantounis (Kate). Loving Mema & G.J. to Stratos & Annalise. Joan went to the High School of Industrial Design in the Bronx, & continued her education at CCNY, Majoring in Art. She became an Art Fellow & taught at the college, received a BFA, & was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. Joan went to work as an Art Director for Shaller-Rubin Advertising Agency, & put her husband through medical school at SUNY Downstate School of Medicine. Upon her husband Stratos' completion of his surgical residency at Bellevue Hospital, he was drafted by the U.S. Army, & was stationed with Joan & their two children at Camp Darby in Livorno, Italy. Much to Joan's delight, her art blossomed during their three-years spent in Italy, with frequent trips to Florence. When the family returned to the states, they settled in Rockville Centre, where Joan became active in community affairs as the President of the League of Women Voters, & was instrumental in creating Rockville Centre's Village Art Club. Joan continued creating beautiful art until her untimely death from Pancreatic Cancer. Friends may call Sunday, January 28th from 2 to 4 & 7 to 9 at Thomas Glynn & Sons Funeral Home, 20 Lincoln Avenue, Rockville Centre. Service will be held on Monday, January 29th at 10:00 am at The Church of The Ascension in Rockville Centre, interment to follow at Greenfield Cemetery.
