Betsy Zelles Obituary

Elizabeth "Betsy" Zelles (nee McGrath) passed away on February 8, 2025 after a five-year battle with breast cancer. Born in Flushing, NY on September 7, 1949, she was the fourth child of the late Raymond X. McGrath and Mary Jane Mangan. She was raised in Valley Stream, NY and attended Holy Name of Mary grammar school and Central High School. She is survived by her siblings the Honorable Raymond J. McGrath (Sheri), the late Mary Jane Grismer (Jim), Brian (Maryann) and Thomas (Ann).


Loving wife of Ed, devoted mother of Ned (Meghan), Chris (Erin), and Kate (Tom). Dear Nana to Maggie, Haley, Reagan, Emily, Matthew, Reese and one on the way. Foung aunt (great aunt) to many nieces and nephews as well as her cousins.


Betsy received her nursing degree from Flushing Hospital School of Nursing in 1970 and began her nursing career at South Nassau Communities Hospital, taught a home health care aide course and was also a Home Care Nurse and teacher at Better Home Health Care.


Besides her nursing career she taught CCD for 25 years preparing children to receive the Holy Eucharist. She will be remembered for her chocolate chip, raisin cookies and Irish soda bread as well as many delicious meals whose recipes she shared.


Reposing at the Thomas A. Glynn & Son Funeral Home, 20 Lincoln Ave Rockville Centre Monday February 10, 2025 from 4 to 8 PM. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday Feburary 11, 2025 at 9:45 AM at St. Agnes Cathedral.
