
Obituary of Colonel Robert Schatz
A Life of Service and Dedication
Colonel Robert (Bob) Schatz passed away on March 7, 2025. Born in Brooklyn, NY, on March 7th, 1925, Colonel Schatz's life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his country, community and family.
He left high school to enlist in the Army, where he served as a medic in the 95th Medical Battalion during World War II. Colonel Schatz participated in the Battle of the Bulge and received several distinguished honors, including the Bronze Star and the Army Commendation Medal. His valor and contributions to the liberation of Northern France were recognized with the Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, France’s highest award.
Colonel Schatz was a devoted member of several veteran organizations, including the American Legion, Jewish War Veterans, and the VFW in East Rockaway. He was also a proud Mason. After his distinguished military career, he retired as the Deputy Commissioner of the Town of Hempstead in the Department of Public Safety and as a Federal Marshall. He continued his service in the New York Guard, where he retired with the rank of Colonel. It was a great honor for Bob to be the Grand Marshall of the Oceanside Memorial Day parade and to be honored by the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County the New York Yankees and the New York Islanders for his service to his country.
He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Graham and his beloved wife, Irma, and leaves behind his loving children: Larry, Arleen, Ellen, Jerry, David, and Sue. Colonel Schatz cherished his grandchildren, Michael, Alexandra, Joseph, and Halle, and adored his great-grandchildren, Eli Scott and Isabelle.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to The Hewlett House at 86 East Rockaway Rd, Hewlett, NY, or the Patriot Club at Oceanside High School, Skillman Avenue, Oceanside, NY.
The funeral will be private, and the family will hold Shiva at 323 Perkins Avenue, Oceanside, NY on Sunday March 9th from 4pm to 8pm and on Monday March 10th from 2pm to 8pm.
