Maraline Murphy Obituary

Maraline Ann Gallagher Murphy, beloved wife, mother, Mimi, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on June 23, 2025. She was 85 years old.

Born August 23, 1939, in Manhattan, New York, Maraline was the fifth of eight children born to John Murray Gallagher and Eileen McNamara Gallagher. She was raised in Garden City, New York, and graduated from Sacred Heart Academy and Marymount College in Virginia.

In the fall of 1961, she married the love of her life, Thomas J. Murphy, beginning a beautiful 64-year marriage. Together they raised eight children: Maureen (Timothy), Thomas, Jr. (Jacqueline), Karen (Robert), Kevin (Tina), Brian (Robin), Maraline, Nancy (Patrick), and Michele (Paul).

Maraline spent most of her life in Rockville Centre, New York, where she and Tom created a home that was open, vibrant, and full of love. She was the proud Mimi of 26 grandchildren: Ashley, Thomas, Meghan, Mackenzie, PJ, Timothy, Daniel, Morgan, Amanda, Caroline, Christopher, Connor, Lisa, Robert Austin, Ryan, Julie, Kate, Sean, Stephen, Emily, Maraline, Lauren, Erin, Courtney, Brendan, Paige, all of whom she adored.

A longtime volunteer at Mercy Hospital, Maraline gave over four decades of service to others. After raising her children, she returned to school and earned a graduate degree in interior design from Parsons School of Design in New York City. She was also a gifted painter and artist, with an eye for beauty and detail that touched every part of her life.

She enjoyed her time as a member at Hempstead Golf & Country Club, where she spent decades building lifelong friendships and enjoying time with family. She loved spending time at her home in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and her cabana in Point Lookout, New York, where she welcomed everyone with warmth and open arms.

Maraline was known for her magnetic presence, old-world glamour, and wicked sense of humor. A consummate lady, you could never find her without her signature coiffed hair, long red (or French-tipped) fingernails, and a cardigan draped elegantly over her shoulders. She brought style and spirit to every room she entered. She was the true matriarch of a large and loving family, a source of strength, and a constant example of grace and resilience.

She is survived by her husband, children, and beloved grandchildren; as well as her sisters Eileen Poczatek, Maureen Gibbons, Joan Murphy, Nanette Meyers, and Regina Adams; and many extended family members and dear friends.

She is predeceased by her daughters, Maureen B. Michel and Maraline A. Murphy II, her grandson Thomas J. Murphy III, her parents, her brothers John Murray Gallagher and Michael Gallagher, and her dear cousin, Cornelia Smith.

Maraline will be remembered for her boundless generosity, strength, beauty, and the deep love she gave to all who knew her.
