Robert George Baker Obituary

Robert George Baker passed away in the comfort of his home and surrounded by the love of his family on July 21, 2025. He was 86 years young.

Born and raised in Bayside, Queens, Bob was the third of seven children and spent summers in Point Lookout, where lifelong friendships were forged in the sand.

He married the love of his life, Cynthia, in 1969 at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in West Hempstead, NY. Together they raised five children in Rockville Centre, their home for nearly 35 years.

If you knew Bob, you knew Cynthia, as the unwavering center of his world. Their devotion and affection for one another, especially through the many challenges of dementia, only grew greater over time. Their five children and 11 grandchildren continue to learn from their example of steady love and humor filled endurance over their 56 years of marriage.

As a parishioner of Saint Agnes Catholic Church in Rockville Centre, NY, Bob led with a servant’s heart and was always willing to encourage and help others in his church and community at large.

Bob was a quiet doer. He rescued bread, produce and other perishable items from supermarkets, restaurants and pizzerias. He filled his car to the rim and delivered his haul to food shelters in nearby towns on Long Island several times a week over many years. He also found joy in personally preparing full Thanksgiving feasts for needy families in neighboring towns and delivered them just in time for Thanksgiving dinner.

He passed along his spirit of service without ever making a fuss. He was also quick to extend his generosity to mere acquaintances who happened to have fallen on hard times.

Bob commuted to New York City for over 40 years, running a small offset printing business that helped him support his family while also allowing him to be exceptionally present at home.

As much as he loved his wife and his children, Bob had a true love affair with the New York Giants. A season ticket holder his entire life, if he wasn’t in East Rutherford, NJ on Sundays in the fall, he could be heard at 153 Broadway, screaming and cursing at the coaches and referees for nearly 3 hours, so much so that the rest of his family had to run around closing all the windows… unless of course the Giants were winning!! Sorry, Mary & Joe!!

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, William & Helen Baker (O’Malley), siblings William, Thomas, Michael, Mary Hogan, and Ann Traulsen.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Cynthia (Ferri); children, Erin (Kevin), Brian (Maureen), Brendan (Patty), Tara, and Tim; his loving sister, Catherine Hamill; his life long best friend, Chris Laskas; and his 11 grandchildren: Savannah, Amanda, Jack, Emma, Kelly, Ashley, George, Shea, Molly, Kelsey, and Ellie.

We would be remiss if we didn’t give a special thanks to our husband and father‘s caregivers, and especially his daughter Tara, who dutifully and lovingly took care of Bob for many years before his passing. Tara‘s impact on Bob’s happiness in his later years was extraordinary. A special thanks to Ally who was an absolute gift to our family during a very difficult time.

We like to imagine Bob, reunited with his parents and siblings in heaven, sipping on a Perfect Dewar’s Rob Roy (with a twist of lemon & a goblet filled with ice) while cooking an unforgettable meal for all his favorite people. Saving a spot for the rest of his crew, but looking down and protecting us all until we arrive.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation of time or money to one of the following local food pantries in Bob’s memory:
