John Ryan Hubbell, affectionately known as Jack to his friends and loved ones or Jackson to his grandchildren, peacefully passed away after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his family. He was 89 years old.
Born on May 6, 1936, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to John Lynch Hubbell and Agnes Ryan Hubbell. Jack moved with his family to Rockville Centre, New York, at the age of two. It was there that he built a life rooted in faith, family, and community, remaining a proud resident for the rest of his 89 years.
Jack enlisted in the United States Army and attended the Army Language School in Monterey, California where he was trained in six languages. In 1957, he was stationed in Munich, Germany, where during the height of the Cold War he served in military intelligence, monitoring transmissions between East German forces. One evening, while scanning the airwaves, he happened upon the broadcast of the North Carolina NCAA championship game. Captivated by their victory, he became a devoted fan for life.
After returning home, Jack earned a business degree and began what would become a long and respected career as an insurance broker. Known for his integrity, steady counsel, and genuine care for his clients, Jack built lasting relationships that spanned decades.
In 1961, Jack married the love of his life, Serena Minutolo. After a brief time in Kew Gardens, Queens, they returned to Rockville Centre, where they raised five children and created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and unwavering support. Jack was an active coach and administrator of St Agnes CYO and Rockville Centre BBL. His passion for the game came through in his coaching “we not me” teamwork strategy.
Jack is survived by his beloved sister, Sarah; his children, Joseph his wife Jennifer ‘nee Roth, Cristina, John and his wife Alessandra ‘nee Jacks, Serena and her husband Glenn Masterson and Matthew and his wife Jennifer ‘nee Buckler; and his eighteen precious grandchildren, who were his greatest pride and joy. He is also survived by five cherished nieces and nephews.
Jack will be remembered for his deep devotion to his family, his quiet strength, his love of country, and the steady example he set for all who knew him. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched. If you had the pleasure of meeting Jack you would be charmed by his hospitality and kindness. Goodbyes should be brief he would often say. Until we meet again.
In lieu of flowers, we kindly ask that donations be made in Jack's name to either the American Cancer Society https://www.cancer.org/ or the Kanas Center for Hospice Care https://eeh.org/ways-to-give/donate/.
