Sadly I did not learn of the passing of Mary Fox until after this past Christmas when my holiday card was returned undeliverable. Mary and my Mom were longtime friends. They met as young teachers at Island Trees High School where my Mom, Mary Zeien, was a Math teacher. I lost regular contact with Mary when she moved to a senior living home a couple of years ago. I have many fond childhood memories of Mary babysitting myself and my three younger brothers. She would often instruct us in a variety of pretty cool at home science experiments. On many occasions during summer vacation we would all go to Adventureland in Farmingdale. Mary took us to see the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall. We also went to museums and plays and other NYC activities with Mary. On our childhood trips to NYC with Mary we all enjoyed the fun of going to the Horn and Hardart restaurant automat. When I was in high school Mary was happy to offer me help in preparing for the Biology Regents. Mary enjoyed traveling and over the many years I would receive postcards from her trips to the UK and other destinations. In college when I went to Europe Mary sent me a copy of ‘Let’s Go Europe’. Mary was a wonderful person and I am truly thankful for having her in my life. She is missed.

She was one of my favorite teachers at Island Trees, and her name has come up on numerous occasions when I get together with some of my old classmates. I can still remember her class on the digestive system, and her giving us a relatable example of someone eating a hamburger and showing us with hand-drawn pictures on the board how it made its way down the digestive tract! She was so passionate about biology and teaching and it showed! She was a remarkable teacher and person. Jane Mathews Island Trees class of '72.

She sparked joy, wonder, and a curiosity that continues 50 years later. I can still see her standing at the blackboard, drawing the parts of a cell - chalk in hand, with large sweeping arcs of her arm as she told the story of life with excitement, enthusiasm, reverence and awe. Ms.Fox's class was the one you looked forward to going to. She was fun, full of energy and knew how to teach her subject matter. I loved her class and loved biology the rest of my life. The Island Trees community is missing a fabulous teacher and person. Godspeed miss fox

Mary Fox was my biology teacher at Island Trees. She loved to teach, and she sparked in me a fascination with biology that has continued for over 40 years. There is a Hebrew expression “l‘dor va’dor,” which means “from generation to generation.” Miss Fox shared with me a passion for learning, and I pledge to pass it forward and share the same passion with my students to honor her.

It makes me sad to see such a stark obituary for a remarkable woman. I was a student in her biology class the 1978-9 academic year. I remember her fondly as a teacher with energy and compassion. She was passionate for her material and had a desire to pass it along to her students. I’m glad to hear she lived a long life. I hope it was a life full of love.
