I first met Al in 1977 when I was assigned to the 43rd. precinct in The Bronx. We became RMP partners and instantly developed a bond and friendship which lasted 45 years. I could always count on him to have my back in any dicey situation we would encounter while on patrol. Al was a tough, stand up guy never taking any “gruff” from anyone. As tough as he was he was a very compassionate guy, with a heart of gold. Always the first one there to help someone in need. Even in passing, by being an organ donor.
He had the greatest sense of humor of anyone I have ever know in my life. While on patrol we would talk and laugh all day. He made it fun to go to work. In spite of the tragedies in his life he still maintained that great sense of humor. Over the phone we could talk and laugh for hours about current events and stories of the past. One of our favorite memories was the time his black Lab ripped out the entire interior of his car including the padded dash board. He had to put a piece of plywood on the seat springs so he could drive to work. I will miss those times, but most of all I will miss the best friend I ever had.
I love you man. Until we meet again keep that RMP warmed up. R.I.P. my special friend.
