Obituary of Geraldine Haverty
Geraldine (Gerry) Frare Haverty passed peacefully on Tuesday, April 9th, 2024. Born on October 8, 1943 to Albert and Theresa, Gerry and her older brother Albie grew up on the vibrant streets of NYC's Hell's Kitchen. Gerry attended Cathedral High School and went on to marry Michael Haverty in September 1965 settling in Elmhurst, NY. For 38 years Michael showered Gerry with his love and attention, always wanting to dance the lindy with her and always calling her his “bride” until his passing in 2004.
Gerry was the proud mother of five children, Michael, Kathleen, Maureen, Eileen, and Matthew with loving sons-in-law and daughters-in-law – Somari, John, Gerald, Aaron and Maureen. She had eight grandchildren - Joshua, Ryan, Jack, Catherine, Madelyn, Grace, Delilah, and Dashiell. Gerry embraced her role as nanny with enthusiasm. She loved to enjoy time with them – reading, vacationing in the Poconos and Rehoboth and sharing a great joke or riddle.
Gerry's journey through life was enriched by strong family bonds and many fun family gatherings. She was surrounded by a loving extended family which included strong relationships with her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Gerry had a lifelong love of learning and teaching. While raising her children, she returned to school earning her bachelor’s degree in economics and her master’s degree in education from Queens College. Her pursuit of knowledge was also evidenced by her years as a NYC public school teacher where she proudly worked until retirement.
Gerry's presence illuminated the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her warmth, laughter, quick wit, and wisdom were just a few of her gifts that she shared with the world. Gerry was a fantastic cook – making the best meatballs! She loved a great game of Scrabble or Trivia Pursuit and most importantly made amazing friends everywhere she went who stayed with her throughout her life.
Gerry's spirit lives on in the hearts of those she loved and those whose lives she touched. She is survived by her older brother Albie, her five children and seven grandchildren.
