Obituary of Joseph C. Smetana

Joseph C.Smetana died peacefully on August 13, 2024 of Rockville Centre.  Beloved husband of Claire.  Loving father to Claire Marie, James, Regina (Allan) and Garrett (Susan).  Devoted grandfather of John.  Joseph was born in Brooklyn, NY.  He is a graduate of St. John's University and College of Insurance.  Joseph served in the Marine Reserves.  He started his career in Insurance Consulting.  He was hired by AIG in 1974 as the president of AIG Risk Management.  Here he built a multi-million dollar cutting edge division.  Joe received an honorary doctorate from St. John's University. He served on several boards including Board of Governors, St. John's and Atlantic Conservation Partnership.  Joe and Claire were collaborating partners for the Insurance Hall of Fame, The Claire and Joseph Smetana Gallery.  Joe enjoyed traveling the world with his wife Claire.  He was an accomplished pianist.  Joe was an avid cinematographer and wine enthusiast.  He will be missed by many. Visitation will be held on Sunday 2 PM to 6 PM at the Thomas A. Glynn & Son Funeral Home 20 Lincoln Ave Rockville Centre.  Mass of Christian Burial to be held on Monday 9:45 AM St. Agnes Cathedral Rockville Centre.
