Bryan J. Rose Obituary

Bryan J. Rose (54), a resident of Rockville Centre, New York, passed away on

November 8, 2024, after a brief but fierce battle with pancreatic cancer.

Bryan was born on December 28, 1969, in Bloomington, Indiana, the youngest

child of Lowell C. Rose and Mary J. Rose. He was a cranky baby signaling his

presence – and his argumentative side - from the very beginning. He also

showcased his endless curiosity early on, experimenting with things like trying

to turn a vacuum cleaner into a fire hose, which made life more exciting in the

Rose household.

Bryan’s early curiosity foreshadowed a love of learning that stayed with him

throughout his life. His parents were a little surprised when he announced that

he intended to spend a summer reading the great books (rather than working)

but that was Bryan – he just wanted to know things. He received a B.A. in

History and Religious Studies (magna cum laude) in 1992 and a M.A. in Religious

Studies in 1996, both from Indiana University.

He then decided it was time to learn something new, so he moved on to the

University of Virginia Law School where he was a Hardy Cross Dillard Scholar,

served as Editor-in-Chief of the Virginia Law Review and received his J.D. in

1999, with High Distinction and as member of the Order of the Coif. His

academic achievements at UVA were truly impressive. Yet, the best thing he got

from UVA was meeting his wife, Kathryn (Murphy) Rose. His friends and family

still aren’t sure how he got that lucky, but they are all very grateful that Bryan

and Kathryn found each other.

Kathryn quickly learned that loving Bryan also meant Christmas in Indiana – a

place she wasn’t sure existed before they met – and becoming a serious fan of

the Indiana Hoosiers, the Chicago Bears and the Chicago Cubs, among others.

The shock of having an entire family that views candy stripes as a fashion

statement may never completely go away.

Bryan’s career reflected his passion for new challenges. He clerked for the

United States Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit and then served as an

Assistant Attorney General for the Office of the Illinois Attorney General,

Solicitor General’s Office. That led to a stint as an Assistant United States

Attorney for the United States Attorney’s Office, Eastern District of New York. He

then left the practice of law, going to work for Stroz Friedberg, LLC and then Aon

Cyber Solutions in the cyber-security and digital forensics arena. After leaving

Aon, he embarked on a new adventure starting his own consulting business.

Unlike his Mom and sister, Bryan was a natural athlete. He was an All-State

baseball player and pretty much good at every athletic endeavor he undertook.

He didn’t have to take lessons – he would just pick up a racket or a club and go.

As an adult, he completed Iron Man competitions in New York and Texas and

ran the New York Marathon.

Ultimately, being a husband and a dad to Lauryn, Natalie and Brendan was

everything. He was especially proud of the fact that each of the Rose kids was a

unique individual. In the hospital, he talked about Lauryn starting her first

teaching job, Natalie crushing her first corporate internship, and Brendan

deciding to create his own path in hockey at every opportunity. He loved being a

dad and he was so good at it.

Family also encompassed a group of friends that stayed with him throughout his

life. He had a knack for identifying good friends and bringing them into what was

a big extended family. That was never more evident than when he got sick. He

had visitors from all over the country and all periods of his life showing up to

help.

Bryan is survived by his wife, Kathryn (Murphy) Rose, his children, Lauryn Rose,

Natalie Rose, and Brendan Rose, his mother, Mary J. Rose, His sister, Nancy

(Rose) Mitchell, his brother-in-law William H. Mitchell, his nephew, Charles R.

Mitchell, his father-in-law, James Murphy, his mother-in-law, Betsy Murphy, his

brother in law, Paul Murphy, his sister-in-law, Suzanne (Murphy) Dumas, his

brother-in-law, Steve Dumas, and his nephew Quinn Dumas. Bryan was

preceded in death by his father, Lowell C. Rose, and his brother, David L. Rose.
