Schlegelmilch, Paul of Rockville Centre on October 28, 2016. Beloved Husband of the late Shirley. Loving father of Barbara Kenney (John), Nancy Roesch (Jeffrey), Judith Mahany (David), Joan Regnier (Kerry) and Susan Martin (Patrick). Also survived by his loving sister Evelyn McAteer and predeceased his two brothers Raymond and Richard. Loving Grandfather of 14 Grandchildren and 34 Great Grandchildren. He is well known as Pop to many friends and family. Paul is a shining example of a life well lived. He would say his longevity was due to working in his yard and always laughing. He loved doing the Jumble in the paper every morning, listening to Frank Sinatra and staying busy with so many projects. To this day, he continues to touch many lives with his warm smile, his hearty laugh and his ever present whistle. Paul was a World War II Veteran. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942 and served as a Technical Corporal in Company C, 602, Tank Destroyer Battalion, 3rd Army, commanded by General George S. Patton, Jr. He was awarded four major campaign battle stars for the Battle of Northern France, the Battle of the Ardennes (Bulge), the Battle of the Rhineland, and the Battle of Central Europe. On May 7th, 1945, he was asked by his headquarters to carry to his unit the telegram announcing Germany’s surrender. He returned from the Army on October 31, 1945. He worked as an accountant in the coffee brokerage industry in Manhattan and White Plains. He and his wife, Shirley, were married 57 years before her death in 1998. He joined Saint Marks United Methodist Church on April 6th, 1928 and had been a faithful member ever since. He was very involved in his church community as a Financial Secretary for many years. In addition to being involved in his church community, he was also a long-time member at the Rockville Centre VFW. In 2010, Paul was chosen to be the Grand Marshall at the Memorial Day Parade. Friends may call Tuesday 2-4 & 7-9 PM at Thomas A. Glynn & Son Funeral Home 20 Lincoln Ave Rockville Centre. Funeral Service will be held Wednesday 10 AM St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 200 Hempstead Ave Rockville Centre.
