Obituary of Sylvia Keary Wirtz
Sylvia Keary Wirtz, age 93, died on July 8, 2019 at a Hospice center in Rockville Centre, NY. She was a resident of Toms River, NJ. Following a mild stroke, she suffered a ruptured gallbladder that was inoperable.
Born March 10, 1926 in Jersey City, NJ Sylvia married Joseph Francis Wirtz in 1947. She was pre-deceased by her husband, and two sons: Jospeh Francis Wirtz, Jr and John Frederick Wirtz. Sylvia is survived by her brother Thomas Keary, daughter Carolyn Wirtz and her partner Peter S Ehrman, her grandson Joseph Edward Wirtz and his wife Beatrice van Steertegem and two great-granddaughters Emma & Chloe van Steertegem, and her daughter-in-law Sarah Jane Sprague.
Sylvia’s career path included financial management for Bamberger’s Dept Store, The American Cancer Society and 108-114 Wooster St Corp as well as managing finances for Holiday Heights First Aid Squad in Toms River, where she volunteered for 20 years “riding the rig” with her crew of Squad volunteers.
She enjoyed travel, bowling, card night with her friends, and was an avid reader, but what she treasured most was spending time with her family. She loved, understood and cared about all her nieces and nephews and held all of her friends close to her heart in appreciation, respect and love. She was nothing if not practical with a great sense of humor, unique sharp wit, generous spirit and always a willingness to help.
A phrase from a Shakespeare play was heard often in conversation with her:
“That that is is.”
Honoring her wishes, there will be no formal services.
In lieu of flowers, Sylvia was dedicated to “The Squad” ~ contributions in her honor may be sent to:
